Well, that’s a multi-facetted answer, let’s start with a break down of our social fabric. Shortly after the 2nd world war the middle class became the most dominant members of society, this was a time when a family could afford a home, war time bungalows would cost under ten thousand dollars and the “Man of the house” would be the sole “bread winner” With mom at home, children grew up with strict moral standards. If you got out of line if it wasn’t just a parent holding you accountable it would often be a total stranger! “Takes a village to raise a child” How many times have you heard “We never had to lock our doors, 5-year-olds, myself included would walk ourselves to school without an adult” Well that has all changed, if you haven’t been a victim of crime, consider yourself one of the lucky ones and don’t wait to find out. Victims of crime tell me that when they have been violated it stays with you for life, A cut that refuses to heal. So, what can you do about it? When you think about security, what’s the first thing that comes to mind, tic toc, tic toc, tic toc. That’s right “ALARMS AND CAMERAS” But why?, think back to a time when there was no such thing as “ADT or Chub Security” heck, we didn’t even have electricity. So in a world where everyone wanted what you have, people would need to Fortify them selves the Hard Way “keep the marauders from the door” fortification such as extremely high and thick walls, a moat and draw bridge, braces across an extremely heavy door, heavily armed soldiers the list go on, the moral of the story is similar to the earlier slogan about a village, when it comes to your family and home, “Security is a multi level approach” Your local Alarm Company wont tell you that, Alarms and Cameras are fine and we have no problem with them, almost 100% of our customers have one but this should not be your sole line of defence, it cant be, they only work after the fact, the devastating breach is done. You need to be pro-active! The Police no longer show up if your alarm company reports a break-in in progress. Why, just a fun fact, Ontario’s false alarm rate is currently 97% The boy that cried wolf comes to mind The police have better things to do than follow up knowing that merely 3 in 100 calls are an actual home invasion or break-in. The bottom line is to make yourself the least attractive location of opportunity, one of my all-time favorite expressions “If you are in the forest with a group of people and you are being chased by a bear, you don’t need to be the fastest runner you just need to be faster than the slowest” Stay Safe
