GREATER POWERS -A THREAT TO THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS-
GREATER POWERS
-A THREAT TO THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS-
By Dean Hickey
“Democracy’s real test lies in its respect for minority opinion.”
EDITOR, ELLERY SEDGWICK 1872 – 1960
“A community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbour as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation without specification or backing takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent…” JUDGE LEARNED HAND 1872 – 1961
KEEPING A LID ON DISSENTING OPINIONS
It has been argued that the mutual confidence upon which all else depends can be maintained only by an open mind and a brave reliance on free discussion. The opinions and beliefs of elected officials are for the most part borrowed from the general populace, and a common tendency exists by those outside accepted inner circles to defy authority when seeking the right of free speech.
The arguments by those who say councillors cannot trust their reasoning over others who seek to dominate public discourse is something of this kind: Since they are unable to throw over their adversaries who, in various coalitions within local councils disagree with their statements, they are somehow expected to step in line with prevailing thought on everyday affairs as shown by a majority of members.
This includes consideration of those policies which affect our families, our interactions as citizens, and the very essence of public morality that has for so long defined the narratives of our society. The average person fully accepts much of what they hear as truth, yet in the face of attacks against dissenting opinions, those truths can become nothing more than propaganda forced on an otherwise ill-informed electorate.
We are sometimes deceived when we think that certain elements of group-think are the rational product of intellectual and objective thought. Top-down policies that stifle free speech serve to mold our ways of perceiving things, in spite of ourselves.
The power of a centralized authority is never more potent than when it produces a political and social climate favorable to those taking part in a coalition of thought that is so tightly controlled as go against our rights and freedoms.
The reality is that, despite the focus that has been placed on an outspoken Pickering councillor who has sought to challenge ‘progressive’ ideology, the kind of reaction and subsequent censure is not at all limited to one municipality. Though it may be argued that the severity of debate over sensitive issues went beyond typical political discourse, the fact that extreme remedies were imposed to repeatedly enforce a one-sided sense of public virtue is an indictment on the quest for even greater powers to silence dissent.
To raise this issue from the micro to the macro level in Canadian politics is to see a highly developed effort by elected officials to assume that revulsion in and of itself would be sufficient to put an end to debate, and to allow the removal of individuals from office, whether they enjoy the benefit of public support or not.
I suggest the observable behaviour on the part of all major participants in the Pickering matter may be seen as less than productive, certainly at times disparaging, and at best reactionary due to personal motivations.
To be specific, elected officials can question the appropriateness of universal washrooms without being discriminatory. They can express concerns as to LGBTQ material for children of a certain age group without being homophobic, and may seek clarity as to race-related programs and civic promotions without harboring a hate-filled agenda.
Conversely, it is a grave error on the part of those who hold political office to wear the mask of martyrdom by way of an overarching reaction against all authority. Taking on multiple causes is not a form of liberation, but rather a burden of self-entitlement that can only result in further marginalization among one’s peers. At some point, Reason must be allowed to overtake emotion, and there is little evidence to show that much of what has become so ingrained among Pickering councillors is about to change.
STRONG MAYOR POWERS
The foundation upon which our Canadian political system rests, in its various forms, is the fundamental principle of majority rule. The imposition of Strong Mayor Powers by the Provincial government in July 2023 entrenched a new overriding principle; that of minority rule.
Since that time, mayors such as Oshawa’s Dan Carter can now exercise almost total control over city budgets, rendering the rest of council as secondary actors on the great stage that is city hall.
The law also allows Mayor Carter to direct staff to conduct research and write reports, as well as appoint the Chief Administrative Officer, department heads, chairs and vice-chairs of local boards, and establish and dissolve committees, though he can if he so choses delegate some or all of those powers to council.
Ironically, in the face of a proposal for an increase in property taxes that would see Oshawa residents paying an additional 7.87% in 2025, some Ontario mayors have used their newfound budgetary powers to put a cap on such increases, and even institute a property tax deferral for seniors.
A legal opinion was issued to one municipal council indicating that decisions made under the Strong Mayor Powers are not reviewable or appealable, and that the Province has said it is up to individual municipalities to determine if the powers are in accordance with legislation.
A RECKONING
The various aspects that make up the issue of majority vs. minority rule stand in stark contrast between the experiences of a lone Pickering councillor on the one hand, and that of a majority of the members of Oshawa council on the other. Neither has any degree of common attributes and they are in fact divided conceptually into two contrasting realities.
Nevertheless, they both illustrate a growing trend towards silencing debate on matters ranging from ideological disputes in general, to the more specific question as to what constitutes the best form of representation at the municipal level.
The public interest may be seen as substantially reduced when time-honoured traditions such as freedom of speech and majority rule among elected officials are thrown aside, regardless of the rationale for doing so.
Time alone will show us the effects these issues will have on our democracy.
Unjust Arrests: How Medical Conditions Are Mistaken for Drug Use, Leaving Vulnerable People at Risk
Unjust Arrests:
How Medical Conditions Are Mistaken for Drug Use, Leaving Vulnerable People at Risk
By Dale Jodoin
Across North America, there is an unsettling trend that’s putting innocent people in harm’s way. Imagine experiencing a medical emergency — maybe it’s a sudden diabetic episode or a panic attack — only to be mistaken for a drug user, handcuffed, and thrown in jail instead of receiving the medical help you need. This is the reality for many individuals with serious medical conditions that, unfortunately, can mimic the signs of drug use. These people, already vulnerable, are now facing stigma, legal troubles, and even life-threatening consequences because of a system that lacks understanding and compassion.
Medical Conditions That Look Like Drug Use
Certain health conditions cause symptoms that can appear similar to intoxication or drug use. Here are some examples:
Diabetes (Hypoglycemia): When blood sugar levels drop too low, a person can become confused, dizzy, and unsteady on their feet, much like someone who is drunk or high. They might slur their speech, sweat profusely, or even pass out. Despite this, people in this state have been mistaken for drug users and denied the immediate care they need.
Epilepsy: People with epilepsy sometimes experience seizures that can make them appear “out of it” or cause sudden behavioral changes. In public settings, they might be seen as “acting strange,” leading law enforcement to jump to conclusions.
Mental Health Conditions (e.g., Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia): Those suffering from severe mental health conditions can exhibit behavior that may be misinterpreted. They may talk quickly, become aggressive, or seem disoriented, and officers who lack training might assume they are on drugs.
Panic and Anxiety Disorders: Panic attacks can cause people to feel overwhelmed, dizzy, short of breath, and fearful. They might tremble or struggle to respond coherently, which some may mistake for drug use.
These examples are just a few of the many medical issues that can be misunderstood, resulting in life-altering consequences for those affected. When individuals in crisis are misjudged, they’re often handcuffed, put in holding cells, or dismissed as “just another drug user.” In reality, they’re people in desperate need of help — help that’s often delayed or denied because of this misinterpretation.
Arrested Instead of Treated
The consequences of these misunderstandings are severe. Instead of getting timely medical care, many individuals end up in custody. The physical and emotional toll of these situations is enormous. Imagine being taken to jail when you’re already in distress and unable to explain yourself. Not only does this deny people medical attention, but it also stigmatizes them, casting them as criminals simply because their medical crisis was misunderstood.
Furthermore, being labeled as a drug user can have lasting effects. It affects relationships, employment, and social standing, leaving people feeling isolated and shamed over something they had no control over.
Why This Keeps Happening
Law enforcement officers often have to make quick decisions in high-stress situations. However, without medical training, it’s easy to mistake the symptoms of a medical condition for the effects of drug use. Police departments are increasingly facing calls to provide more comprehensive training so that officers can better recognize the signs of medical issues.
Despite some progress, many officers still lack the resources or training to accurately distinguish between a medical emergency and drug impairment. As a result, people with legitimate medical needs are being wrongly accused and even put at risk of death when they don’t receive timely help.
Real-Life Stories of Misunderstood Illnesses
In one well-known case, a man suffering from a diabetic episode was driving when his blood sugar dropped. He started to act erratically, and when police arrived, they assumed he was under the influence of drugs. Instead of checking his medical condition, they arrested him. By the time his family could intervene, he was in critical condition due to delayed treatment.
Another case involved a woman experiencing a panic attack in a store. She became visibly distressed, breathing heavily and clutching her chest. The police were called, but instead of offering assistance, they assumed she was on drugs and detained her. This traumatic experience not only left her shaken but also reinforced the stigma that anyone exhibiting unusual behavior must be on drugs.
These stories are not isolated incidents. They happen far too often, highlighting a need for change in how we respond to people in distress.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 606 Revokes My Invitation to Veterans’ Dinner
By Lisa Robinson
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 606 Revokes My Invitation to Veterans’ Dinner—All Because of Rumors Spread by Fellow Council Members! Despite being the only one fighting for freedom and the rights of Pickering residents, I’m being shut out. Is this what our veterans sacrificed for?
I am profoundly disappointed by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 606’s President’s decision to revoke my invitation to the Veterans Dinner—an event that should transcend politics, standing as a tribute to those who sacrificed everything to secure the freedoms we cherish. As someone who has consistently fought for these very freedoms, as my family did, this decision feels like a betrayal, not only to me but to the principles our veterans gave their lives for.
Meanwhile, council members who impose authoritarian, communistic controls within Pickering’s council chambers will be attending this event, claiming to honor the same veterans whose values they are systematically dismantling. Under their rule, our community has witnessed an erosion of democracy so severe that it borders on oppression. These council members have stripped residents of their fundamental right to freely voice concerns, requiring a council vote even to speak on certain topics. They have forbidden the public from recording meetings, demanded two-thirds approval for media presence, and reduced our chambers to a stage for their own agenda, silencing all who dare question or hold them accountable with trespass orders. This is only to name a few.
Now, in a disturbingly authoritarian move, they are pushing for the right to remove elected officials who don’t align with their views stripping the public of their power to choose their representatives. Not only that, demanding that Councillor not have the right to run in the following election. This is not just an
affront to democracy; its election tampering, its tyranny, echoing oppressive regimes that suppress dissent to maintain control. And yet, my Council are the ones still invited to celebrate the freedom our veterans fought for, while I—the only vocal defender of those freedoms—am turned away.
I proudly display the Canadian flag in my office, on my lapel, my parking space, on my door as a reminder of the unity and patriotism our veterans stood for. In contrast, some council members promote divisive special interests, choosing ideological symbols like the pride flag over the flag that represents us all and were disgusted when I said the Canadian flag is my pride flag. I fight for every resident of Pickering, without bias or favor, advocating for the basic rights and protections they deserve. My fellow council members have launched baseless attacks, spreading vile rumors to undermine my character and silence my efforts to hold them accountable for the corruption and cronyism I see seeping into City Hall.
To the thousands, millions, who have supported me across Pickering, Ontario, Canada, and beyond, I thank you. Your encouragement strengthens my resolve to expose the truth, defend our freedoms, and fight for a government that serves the people, not its own interests. While I am disheartened to be denied the chance to honor our veterans in person, at the dinner, I remain steadfast in my commitment to uphold their legacy. I will not be intimidated by those who wield power to stifle dissent and distort democracy to their own ends.
This is not just about one invitation; this is about the fundamental values that our veterans fought and died to protect. I will continue to stand firm, honoring their sacrifice by defending the freedoms they secured and speaking out against those who seek to strip them away. For our veterans, for our community, and for the future of our democracy, I will not be silenced, and I will never give up. See you all on Remembrance Day.
Since posting the above on social media…. One of the Legion bartenders Linda Cook who happens to be a City Councillor in Ward 2 has decided to take to social media to spread many more lies about me, so lets delve in. First, she claims that the Legion does not receive government funding. It’s funny though however councillor Cook assisted in obtaining funds for the Legion’s D-Day BBQ approximately $2,000.00 which is the new allocated amount that anyone can be given without having to go to council and be voted on, and the Legion has also been given money for other projects as well. So the truth is, The City of Pickering has provided financial support to the Legion, even though the organization asserts that it operates mainly through membership fees without "government operating grants." This is a matter of semantics, as these funds are indeed public, even if they don’t fit the technical definition of a “grant.”
This same Councillor has spread lies, claiming that I waited until two days before Remembrance Day to share my thoughts in an effort to shame the Legion and their decision. For clarity, the Legion’s letter was delivered to my office on October 22 which Councillor Cook claimed, and my Executive Assistant stamped received on it Oct 23rd. Yet this Councillor, who I can’t stress enough that works at the Legion, somehow knew and commented on the timing of my receipt and response, suggesting coordination, collusion, within the Legion. The rumor she’s spreading suggests I saw the letter on October 22, a claim made to paint my intentions as disrespectful. In reality, I waited to speak directly with the President after his vacation, which occurred on November 8, before sharing the letter. This blatant lie joins others from this Councillor, claiming that I’ve taken issue with various other community groups, simply because I’m outspoken in defense of freedom and truth. Spreading lies about attacking DARS, SNIP, the Police, The Black Community and the list goes on, in an attempt to distract how the People of Pickering hard earned tax dollars are being recklessly spent.
These ongoing attempts to misrepresent my character only further underline my commitment to giving the people of Pickering and beyond full transparency and genuine service for what’s really happening in our City Hall. For instance, in September I gave a Notice of Motion to play the national anthem before council meetings—a simple act of unity – which has still gone unsupported by fellow council members, this goes along with only flying governmental flags on all governmental buildings with the exclusion of The Poppy Flag and new Veterans Flag. The reluctance to second this motion should be a red flag to residents on Councils lack of patriotism for our National flag and anthem.
Nonetheless, as we approach Remembrance Day, I believe our government should be supporting our school age children in honoring our veterans by excusing them from school and paying for their transportation to attend municipal ceremonies. This small gesture is one I would also like to push as it would allow students to learn directly about the sacrifices made for our freedoms.
My late uncle, Andrew Irwin (Andy), and I share a profound bond in our dedication to protecting freedom. He fought in WWII aboard the Algonquin at Normandy, earning the Russian Medal of Ushakov and the French Legion of Honour before passing at age 92 on June 1, 2017. His legacy of service inspires me daily to uphold the values he defended, and I will never stop fighting as both a civilian and a politician to uphold your Freedoms.
To all veterans and their families: Lest We Forget. Thank you for your service, and may your sacrifices continue to be honored in all we do. I truly Love you all

Do you want Lies or Truth?
By Patricia Conlin
A few weeks ago, I presented to the Regional Council in Durham Region about the harm of their so called “Strategic Plan”. After the massive harm of Covid policies, Regional and local Councils are NOT course correcting and are instead doubling down on blatantly harmful Climate policies using the same fraudulent data that was used during Covid (https://rumble.com/v5g2kt1-proof-of-federal-fraud-interview-with-a-canadian-statistician.html). Enough is enough! below is part of what I said: Chair, Members of the Committee,
I am here today as a concerned citizen to provide evidence of mismanagement of funds and a lack of sustainability in the Envision Durham Official Plan adopted on May 17, 2023. Officials who created this plan did not listen to evidence of harm from citizens and so liability for harm needs to be given back to the elected officials. I only have 5 minutes so will focus on the obvious flaws that need much further discussion. The plan boasts about the upcoming rapid population growth in Durham from today’s almost 700K to 1.3 million by 2051. I ask how does rapid unsustainable population growth achieve carbon neutral communities when humans breathe out C02? Also, how did you get the high number for growth? Government data shows that many Canadian families are having fewer children due to the cost of living. In addition, increases across the board in all- cause mortality and suicide are being recorded and life expectancy has dropped for Canadians like in the US. In addition, many potential skilled immigrants are now rejecting Canada because of the grossly high taxes and the poor quality of services including education, healthcare and housing prices. Building that many homes will also be a challenge especially given the current level of personal debt and high rent and home prices. Pushing a plan to seems to include bringing in countless new migrants, many who will not be able to afford housing-will put a burden on essential services, increase pollution, mental health issues and crime.
On page 35-36 of your Official Plan, your so- called experts outline general policies to achieve net zero by 2050. “It is the policy of Council to: 3.2.1 Establish policies and undertake programs that support the Low Carbon Pathway, target reducing annual GHG emission by 30% over 2019 levels by 2030, and achieve net-zero by 2050.” This is irresponsible and could put you in a position of legal liability for gross negligence as well. This council has heard and been given clear evidence from esteemed scientists have confirmed that Co2 is not a pollutant and is essential for all life -including Canadian Dr. Patrick Moore, cofound of Greenpeace. You refuse to listen to this simple truth. The actual facts on CO2 are that it has risen from .03 - .04% in many decades which is so minuscule as to be ludicrous. In addition, Canada is one of the most carbon neutral countries worldwide. The truth is that net zero carbon like net zero Covid is impossible to achieve and will only result in a further impoverishment of residents and a breakdown of society. This grossly negligent policy push is exactly the same as during Covid, when destructive policies were willfully implemented to achieve net zero covid and massive caused poverty and human suffering to skyrocket only to confess later that net zero covid was never possible. The same thing will happen with net zero carbon. Poverty and suffering are all you will achieve and then you will go “Opps” we made a mistake. Matthew 7 verse 16 states “ Ye shall know them by their fruits.” This Council is acting upon fraud and lies which are causing significant harm residents and must stop.
The truth is that Climate IS CHANGING and always will but not because of carbon dioxide and human activity. If you actually cared about the environment at all, you would force companies to remove the toxic chemicals that are harming our kids and all residents in our food, air, soil and water. You remove FLORIDE from municipal water as it has been ruled an “unreasonable risk to health” from the US federal court. You would ban Round-UP as it is killing our bees and causing human cancer. You would support local farmers who supply our healthy fruits and vegetables instead of bankrupting them and taxing them into poverty with carbon taxes. You would plant trees in urban settings and protect land instead of building condos on Greenspaces and charging people to even walk in their own parks and forests in Durham. You would also stop pushing mass unsustainable immigration and focus on improving the lives of the people who currently live in Durham. If you truly wanted to build a thriving community focus on lowing taxes, creating jobs and improving health. How can you create more jobs when the taxes in Canada are far too high for most small and medium size businesses and many were destroyed already by your draconian lockdowns during covid. How can you promote Green energy jobs when many know that EV vehicles are not green or affordable and the rare earth minerals used for toxic lithium batteries are mined with slave labour. Green energy is a lie that enriches billionaires while making the cost of energy for the masses soar while destroying the environment. Another example of this fraud are windmills which deliver little energy and are decimating whale and bird populations while causing environmental harm when recycled.
If you cared about Durham residents you help them afford their first home by reducing immigration, reducing taxes and eliminating all carbon taxes. You would encourage safer communities by reducing poverty, assisting the homeless and ensuring healthy food is available to be served to our families.
If you cared about Durham residents, you would open your eyes to a growing crisis of mental health issues, poverty, illness and violence and start helping instead of harming with your negligent policies build on lies and delivering suffering. You would read the detailed recommendations provided in the National Citizens Inquiry which concluded that lockdowns and mandates did far more harm than good and the covid shots were neither safe nor effective.
But instead you double down that massive harm has been done by negligent policies with more of the same negligent policies.
This council needs to course correct or be removed. Implementing this Official Plan is gross negligent and those who are involved need to be held responsible.”
What Is the Difference Between Vitamins D, D2, and D3?
What Is the Difference
Between Vitamins
D, D2, and D3?
By W. Gifford-Jones MD and Diana Gifford
How many times have we seen people in a pharmacy looking at the D vitamins. They’re standing on one foot and then the other and wondering which one to purchase. They are not alone. Let’s start with D.
Vitamin D is very important for human health. One of its prime purposes is the absorption of calcium and phosphorus to keep bones healthy and strong. If we develop a deficiency in these two minerals as we age, our bones lose their strength year after year, and we develop a disease called osteoporosis, meaning week bones. This can result in bone fractures, and it may lead to spending time in a wheelchair.
Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin” because it’s the sun’s ultraviolet rays on the skin that trigger the production of vitamin D in the body. The best way to get D is to get out in the sunlight. Exposing your skin to the sun, without sunscreen, for 15 minutes a few times a week, to generate vitamin D is an effective way to maintain bones. You also get D from eating fish, egg yolks, meats and fortified cereals, and from drinking milk and orange juice. If you are on a vegan diet, it’s harder to get D from foods. Vegans need vitamin D supplements.
The next question is, what is the difference between D2 and D3? They have different molecular structures. But here is the surprise. They are metabolized by your liver and kidneys into the same active form of vitamin D! So they also support good health through the absorption of calcium and phosphorus to increase bone and muscle strength.
There are other benefits. These vitamins support the immune system to fight bacteria and viruses. Remember we have told you again and again that high doses of C increase immunity. Now we can add that D2 and D3 by becoming D also fight immunity. This is an important point as today an increasing number of people are developing diseases due to a lack of immunity.
Vitamin D also helps to regulate blood sugar, support brain function, increase cardiovascular health, and lower the risk of certain cancers.
The sun is so vital a source. Those who live in northern climates won’t get much D from the sun during the winter, even if standing out naked and freezing! The problem for indoor elderly people is compounded by aging skin and organs that don’t function as effectively.
Does it matter which vitamin D supplement you purchase? It’s not one of the great decisions we have to make in life. There is some research that shows that D3 is more easily absorbed by the body and is therefore more effective.
What’s more important is that you talk with your doctor about this vitamin, as some medications, such as steroids and statins, can involve interactions.
In general, what is the recommended dosage? The first thing to remember is that vitamin D is fat soluble, unlike vitamin C which is water soluble. This means that vitamin D is stored in the body. This also means that it can build up in the body and lead to vitamin D toxicity, which can harm your health. For children 1 to 18 and for adults, the dosage is 600 IU (15 micrograms). If you are 70 or over, it increases to 800 IU (20 microgram).
Many people are afraid of the sun due to the potential development of malignant melanomas. But researchers have also shown a relationship between skin cancers and low vitamin D levels. So over abstinence, moderation is the answer.er.

Deciding where to live can be a daunting task especially if you have choices to make between competing properties. Of course, in most cases it will come down to your individual needs, which differ from person to person and family to family.
Most people tend to start with size, is there enough room for everyone? How many bedrooms and bathrooms are there? Then they look for location. How many needs will be met by a particular location. Here is where people think about travel time to work, kids walking to school, running out to the corner store and things like that. If you are purchasing, the insurance company will want to know how far you are from the nearest fire hall, yes that affects your rates on Ontario.
Can you walk to work, or will you have to drive? If you need to drive for work, you will want to know how far you are from the highway. How long a drive is it from your potential new home to get to work. Time is of huge importance as people do not want to be stuck in traffic when they can be at home with their family. Are you a recreational family? If so, you will want to check out what is available in a neighbourhood that you are considering. Do you need to consider schools for children? Schools more often than not can be a deciding factor for many people. I have had people come through an open house with maps of neighborhoods, wanting to know about the local school and what rating it has. Some are already aware of the local school’s rating and that is why they are looking at a particular house. They want a precise school district and everything else is secondary.
After work and after school activities will play a role in whether or not the location is a good fit. Often, I hear parents saying that they are so busy with multiple kids and various sports, classes, etc... That they are run ragged by the end of the week.
If you like to dine out or pick up something fast on the way home, restaurants close to home will be important. Equally important will be distance to your family Doctor, pharmacy, gas stations, grocery stores as well as big box stores. All of these things go into making up the ideal community.
I have always found that when you have multiple choices and a few really seem to fit the bill, one of the best tools you can use to help you is the good old pros and cons list. It can become crystal clear in seconds which property would best fit your lifestyle.
One thing that people really do not do enough is knock on the doors of your potential neighbours. You will get a good idea of what it might be like to live in that neighbourhood based on what the people who already do, say. If the people whose doors you knock on are rude and snappy with you, think about having to deal with them in the future. For the most part, the residents of any neighbourhood will give you an honest evaluation of what it’s like to live there. From that, and all of your due diligence, you can make an informed decision.

Canada’s Submarine Project and the Arctic
by Maj (ret'd) CORNELIU. CHISU, CD, PMSC,
FEC, CET, P. Eng.
Former Member of Parliament
Pickering-Scarborough East
As the geopolitical situation in the world grows worse, Canada will be forced, sooner or later, to upgrade its armed forces for the defence of the country. Canada’s Arctic is extremely vulnerable, as several successive governments since WWII have neglected it, hoping that the United States will defend it for us.
With the development of new weapons and new foes on the horizon, the situation has changed dramatically. Climate change has opened up the waters of the Canadian Arctic, increasing the region’s strategic importance and presenting new security challenges from powers such as China and Russia.
Canada’s vast and vulnerable Arctic territory, waters and coastline necessitate a rethinking of our armed forces deployment and submarine fleet. We need a fleet capable of prolonged and stealthy under-ice operations to deter potential adversaries.
When I served on the House of Commons Defence Committee, I raised the need for defence of the Arctic several times, particularly the need for capable submarines. These are formidable weapons we may need in future conflagrations. At that time, my warnings were generally ignored.
Currently, I see that interest in the defence of the Artic is once again becoming a recognized item to be dealt with. A little too late, but better than nothing. It has become clear that addressing threats that originate in the Canadian Arctic, transit through the region, or directly involve the Arctic, such as potential incursions by foreign land and naval forces or unauthorized resource exploitation, can no longer be ignored.
A prime focus should be the building of a strong fleet of submarines. Here again, we see the failure of our public service in purchasing used Victoria-class submarines, from the U.K. government in the 1990s, which have proven inadequate for Arctic operations, frequently spending more time in dry dock than on missions.
The cold depths of the Arctic Ocean have long been a stage for geopolitical manoeuvring, where submarines play a crucial role in national defence strategies, including intelligence gathering, deterrence, and protecting maritime territory.
For Canada, modernizing the fleet is essential for addressing both current and future defence challenges and maintaining a strategic edge in these increasingly contested waters.
In early 2024, the Liberal Government finally unveiled “Our North, Strong and Free,” a comprehensive defense policy update (DPU) that emphasizes modernizing the Royal Canadian Navy’s underwater capabilities as part of a broader strategy to strengthen national security and address evolving challenges.
As part of the DPU, Canada announced plans to invest C$60 billion to replace its aging submarines with up to 12 advanced, conventionally powered vessels designed for Arctic conditions, with the first replacement submarine to be delivered no later than 2035, more than 10 years from now. This is not a good sign. Spending taxpayers’ money on conventional rather than nuclear submarines means we are not getting the most advanced ones.
Even though conversations about the potential acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines have resurfaced, these discussions, unfortunately, remain in the exploratory phase, with no formal commitment thus far from either the government or the military.
Historically, Canada’s interest in nuclear submarines dates back to 1987 — and in fact even as far back as the late 1950s — when Canada announced plans to transition from German-style diesel submarines to a fleet of 10-12 nuclear submarines, surprising non-proliferation advocates.
That announcement nearly led to supply contracts with the U.K. and France. However, under pressure from the United States, which feared the market-driven expansion of nuclear technology, Canada subserviently abandoned these plans. (shades of Avro Arrow, anyone?)
We really face a continued lack of leadership in securing our country’s defence.
Today, opinions within Canada on acquiring nuclear submarines remain sharply divided.
Proponents highlight the strategic advantages of nuclear powered submarines, such as their long-range capabilities and ability to engage in extended Arctic operations. These attributes would enhance Canada’s role within NATO and strengthen its defense posture alongside key allies like the United States.
Critics, argue against nuclear submarines citing high costs, logistical challenges, complex maintenance, potential safety and environmental risks, and the challenge of training crews to operate them.
We seem to have learned nothing from the fiasco of acquiring F 35’s ten years later at a higher cost to taxpayers.
Let us hope the F-35 story will not be repeated with the submarines and Canada will decide to acquire nuclear submarines rather than conventionally powered ones. I retain this hope despite the short-sightedness focus of defence officials and the public service on the potential acquisition of conventional submarines .
Canada’s immediate focus on conventional submarines reflects last century warfare mentality. The immediate goal should look to the future and build the advanced skills and capabilities needed to adopt more sophisticated submarine technologies, including the nuclear-powered submarines.
This approach would better position Canada to address evolving security challenges in the Arctic and beyond. Strengthening security co-operation with like-minded countries and jointly pursuing advanced submarine technologies, including nuclear options, should be considered a primary goal.
Furthermore, our current politicians should take a page from the playbook of WWII Prime Minister W.L.M. King and Minister C.D. Howe in skillful negotiating with the United States in much difficult times. They might find it easier today to navigate diplomatic challenges in lifting the United States. opposition to Canada’s procurement of nuclear submarines. Are our leaders up to it?
In short, the procurement process should aim to achieve the objective of acquiring the most advanced nuclear submarines.
The adoption of advanced submarines also should be pursued alongside the accumulation of comprehensive operational capabilities, technological proficiency, and diplomatic leverage so that the opportunity can be seized immediately when it arises.

Stop Asking Your Interviewer Cliché Questions
By Nick Kossovan
Most job search advice is cookie-cutter. The advice you're following is almost certainly the same advice other job seekers follow, making you just another candidate following the same script.
In today's hyper-competitive job market, standing out is critical, a challenge most job seekers struggle with. Instead of relying on generic questions recommended by self-proclaimed career coaches, which often lead to a forgettable interview, ask unique, thought-provoking questions that'll spark engaging conversations and leave a lasting impression.
English philosopher Francis Bacon once said, "A prudent question is one half of wisdom."
The questions you ask convey the following:
· Your level of interest in the company and the role.
· Contributing to your employer's success is essential.
· You desire a cultural fit.
Here are the top four questions experts recommend candidates ask; hence, they've become cliché questions you should avoid asking:
· "What are the key responsibilities of this position?"
Most likely, the job description answers this question. Therefore, asking this question indicates you didn't read the job description. If you require clarification, ask, "How many outbound calls will I be required to make daily?" "What will be my monthly revenue target?"
· "What does a typical day look like?"
Although it's important to understand day-to-day expectations, this question tends to elicit vague responses and rarely leads to a deeper conversation. Don't focus on what your day will look like; instead, focus on being clear on the results you need to deliver. Nobody I know has ever been fired for not following a "typical day." However, I know several people who were fired for failing to meet expectations. Before accepting a job offer, ensure you're capable of meeting the employer's expectations.
· "How would you describe the company culture?"
Asking this question screams, "I read somewhere to ask this question." There are much better ways to research a company's culture, such as speaking to current and former employees, reading online reviews and news articles. Furthermore, since your interviewer works for the company, they're presumably comfortable with the culture. Do you expect your interviewer to give you the brutal truth? "Be careful of Craig; get on his bad side, and he'll make your life miserable." "Bob is close to retirement. I give him lots of slack, which the rest of the team needs to pick up."
Truism: No matter how much due diligence you do, only when you start working for the employer will you experience and, therefore, know their culture firsthand.
· "What opportunities are there for professional development?"
When asked this question, I immediately think the candidate cares more about gaining than contributing, a showstopper. Managing your career is your responsibility, not your employer's.
Cliché questions don't impress hiring managers, nor will they differentiate you from your competition. To transform your interaction with your interviewer from a Q&A session into a dynamic discussion, ask unique, insightful questions.
Here are my four go-to questions—I have many more—to accomplish this:
· "Describe your management style. How will you manage me?"
This question gives your interviewer the opportunity to talk about themselves, which we all love doing. As well, being in sync with my boss is extremely important to me. The management style of who'll be my boss is a determining factor in whether or not I'll accept the job.
· "What is the one thing I should never do that'll piss you off and possibly damage our working relationship beyond repair?"
This question also allows me to determine whether I and my to-be boss would be in sync. Sometimes I ask, "What are your pet peeves?"
· "When I join the team, what would be the most important contribution you'd want to see from me in the first six months?"
Setting myself up for failure is the last thing I want. As I mentioned, focus on the results you need to produce and timelines. How realistic are the expectations? It's never about the question; it's about what you want to know. It's important to know whether you'll be able to meet or even exceed your new boss's expectations.
· "If I wanted to sell you on an idea or suggestion, what do you need to know?"
Years ago, a candidate asked me this question. I was impressed he wasn't looking just to put in time; he was looking for how he could be a contributing employee. Every time I ask this question, it leads to an in-depth discussion.
Other questions I've asked:
· "What keeps you up at night?"
· "If you were to leave this company, who would follow?"
· "How do you handle an employee making a mistake?"
· "If you were to give a Ted Talk, what topic would you talk about?"
· "What are three highly valued skills at [company] that I should master to advance?"
· "What are the informal expectations of the role?"
· "What is one misconception people have about you [or the company]?"
Your questions reveal a great deal about your motivations, drive to make a meaningful impact on the business, and a chance to morph the questioning into a conversation. Cliché questions don't lead to meaningful discussions, whereas unique, thought-provoking questions do and, in turn, make you memorable.

It is about time that the people win one. It is no secret that North American style politics is in severe need of repair.
No matter where you look. Corruption, collusion prevail. Not to mention wealth.
This past week we witness the pushing of a reset button by the people through what we deem to be a democratic process.
Democracy much like the many other political systems are in danger of extinction and or severe change.
With the recent win by Donald Trump. The world is watching to see him clean out the old and bring in the new. A new system that will punish those that take part in the rat race and reward those that are intellectually capable to work truly in the best interest of those that elected them to office.
Kamala, was a poster child for all that is wrong in politics. A person that would tell you anything you wanted to hear. She would promise the world and deliver excuses.
The question that will linger in her mind for years to come.
‘I SHOULD HAVE TOLD THEM MY PLAN’. Something that until today no one knows what it was.... all we know is that she wanted to be elected to the highest office on a promise of turning some
fictional page.
She promised to do what she failed to for the past four years. She vowed to make changes after she got in and failed to do anything while she was in office.
Well, the people have spoken and they have turned a page in the right direction.
What are we to expect. As promised by Trump. World peace will be re-instated. No more Middle East conflicts. No more Ukraine war.
Finally, peace will come to reign in all foreign conflict. Including the mess along the South Pacific rim. A silent cancer that has been beaten back time and time... Alone they are harmless. In unity they may pose a serious threat.
The U.S. will soon boom economically. As always Canada will follow. Our Canadian dollar will once again start climbing up.
Gas prices will start coming down.
Food prices will come down and immigration put under control.
No more open taps on immigration. No more wasting taxpayers dollars to subsidize refugees.
Canada will soon go through similar political transformation. It is the natural law of Canadian politics. We go red for a while. Then blue and eventually back to red.... What North America needs is a new political system. Hopefully, Trump this time around will rise with the system to implement for generations to come.
It is like that saying goes. Time will tell.
Let’s hope Trump does not waste this golden opportunity for positive change.

A LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE LOCAL ISSUES THAT MADE THE NEWS A MISCELLANY OF STORIES FROM MY NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS FILE
A LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE LOCAL ISSUES THAT MADE THE NEWS
A MISCELLANY OF STORIES
FROM MY NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS FILE
By Dean Hickey
I always enjoy looking through my extensive collection of newspaper clippings which spans 45 years or more. In this week’s column, we’ll take a look at stories from the month of November 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
AUTO WORKERS UNION VOWS AGGRESSIVE CAMPAIGN TO KEEP GM PLANT OPEN… The Toronto Sun reported on November 27, 2018 that General Motors corporate leadership announced plans to close the Oshawa assembly plant. Don Cherry weighed in by encouraging soon-to-be unemployed General Motors workers to not give up. “I really, really felt bad for Oshawa and the great men and women who work at that plant,” said Cherry. “And I know the exact feeling those poor people are feeling. There is nothing worse than being unemployed.
I went through it too.”
The newspaper would go on to say: “When the McGuinty Liberals took power in 2003, Ontario was the jurisdiction with the biggest share of auto production in North America. That has not been the case for some time. Political policy matters, and 15 years of Liberal rule turned Ontario from the economic engine of the country to a province that has received equalization payments from the Federal government for the last several years. Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Ford have both said they will put politics aside and do whatever they can for the workers affected.”
In 2019, General Motors Canada would decide against closing the Oshawa assembly plant, and by 2021 it was retooled to build the Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty truck.
MILLIONS IN TRIBUTE COMMUNITIES CENTRE NAMING RIGHTS… One of the local papers including this one reported on November 15, 2017 that the City of Oshawa was garnering nearly $2.5 million by allowing Tribute Communities (a large regional homebuilder) to have their name on the city’s downtown sports and entertainment venue. The naming rights agreement was obtained by the media after a lengthy Freedom of Information request. It laid out not only the money changing hands, but also the many perks and rules set out over the course of the 10-year agreement. “Due to the facility’s growth and notoriety, preliminary estimates place the opportunity value at approximately $250,000 per year” according to the GM Centre’s 2015 business plan.
Mayor John Henry would tell the newspaper, “It was a great story for the city. For us it’s always trying to find a better way to leverage revenue for the city and it is substantially more than the previous agreement.”
The Tribute Communities Centre, formerly known as the General Motors Centre or GM Centre, opened in November 2006. The arena was constructed during Ward 5 councillor John Gray’s term as mayor to replace the Oshawa Civic Auditorium.
COST IS TOO HIGH TO REVIEW EARNINGS, COUNCILLORS SAY… It was reported on November 1, 2017 that city hall staff were recommending hiring a consultant to review what was seen as an aging remuneration bylaw, which covered the amount of money councillors were compensated for their work, but also any allowances, mileage and expenses, and retirement packages. The cost of the review was tagged at $50,000. The idea was quickly shot down by councillor John Aker at both committee and at council. “I have not heard one councillor suggesting changing the remuneration” he said. “I do not believe this council is going to spend $50,000 to review our salaries. There are other ways to spend that money. We have competent staff here in the building that can review it and know what needs to be done.”
Council would vote down the recommendation by staff to hire the consultant.
DURHAM CHAIRMAN ROGER ANDERSON DIAGNOSED WITH STOMACH CANCER… Local media including this newspaper reported on November 30, 2016 that Regional Chairman Roger Anderson had been diagnosed with cancer. Anderson had sent out an e-mail only days before to announce the news. In his email message he advised his colleagues that he began treatment, and said, “Thanks to the exceptional facilities and expertise available at the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre, I can receive care close to home.” He would continue working, attending committee and council meetings, but with a reduced schedule of public events. His political career began when he was elected as a Councillor in Ajax, in 1985. From 1991 to 1997, he served as Regional Councillor and Deputy Mayor for the Town of Ajax. In 2014, he became the first elected Chairman of Durham Region. He was also the longest serving Chair, having held that office since he was first appointed, in 1997.
Roger Anderson passed away in 2018 at the age of 65.
OSHAWA SOCIAL JUSTICE CHAMPION DIES… The media reported on November 19, 2014 that Beverly McCloskey died at the age of 85 after decades of championing various social issues on behalf of the community. Born in Cornwall, Ms McCloskey began working at General Motors in 1949 as a 20 year old. In 1968, she co-founded the first women’s committee in Canada at the United Auto Workers Local 222. The committee would take their battle for equal rights to Queen’s Park and Oshawa NDP MPP Cliff Pilkey presented a Bill that banned sex and marital status discrimination in the workplace and amended the Human Rights Code of Ontario. It was passed in 1970.
LUTCZYK’S BID FOR FREEDOM FALLS SHORT… The media reported on November 13, 2014 that a judge had rejected Robert Lutczyk’s bid for freedom, rejecting the former Oshawa councillor’s assertion that he was the victim of bias by judges who had denied him bail.
Mr. Lutczyk had been charged with kidnapping, dangerous driving and possession of weapons and explosives, relating to his abduction of Oshawa city solicitor David Potts in October of 2012.
Mr. Lutczyk pleaded guilty in December 2015 and was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison. With credit for pre-trial time in custody, he had three years and four months left to serve, and was freed on statutory release in May of 2018, with conditions that he have no contact with Potts and his family.

Canada on the Brink? The Rise of "Popi," the Leader Who Refuses to Let Go
Canada on the Brink?
The Rise of "Popi,"
the Leader
Who Refuses to Let Go
By Dale Jodoin
In a chilling turn of events, Canada stands at a precarious crossroads. At the heart of it all is a man known only by his self-given moniker, "Popi," who has led the nation for nine years, clinging to power with an unyielding grip. Once seen as a leader with fresh ideas, he now holds the country captive, insisting that he alone has the vision to guide his “children,” the Canadian people. But as his policies erode the very fabric of Canadian society, many citizens are left wondering if his benevolence is nothing more than a thin veneer masking a dangerous desire for control.
A “Father” Who Won't Let Go
“Popi” has made it clear he won’t be stepping down anytime soon, ignoring the whispers of a new election and silencing those within his own party who dare suggest it’s time for change. He views himself as a paternal figure to Canada, casting himself as the nation’s “savior” even while dissent grows within his own ranks. Critics say he no longer listens to his advisors, ignoring the pleas of the public as well as the complaints of party officials who beg him to acknowledge the country’s deepening troubles.
What began as policies rooted in environmental protection have spiraled into laws that only seem to serve his own interests. Though the nation struggles through a recession, Popi’s rhetoric remains defiant. He insists he has the answers, yet his “solutions” seem designed to bring in waves of new citizens under the guise of “economic stabilization,” despite a lack of resources or job opportunities for those already here. In many ways, he has become his own worst enemy—an unyielding leader convinced that no one else could possibly understand what’s best for Canada.
Backed by a Puppet Coalition Partner
If there were any hope of moderating Popi’s influence, it was quickly dashed by the unholy alliance he formed with his puppet coalition partner. Once thought to champion the people, this new coalition partner seems more interested in securing his own cushy pension than in addressing the needs of struggling Canadians. Together, they have created a fortress of power that insulates them from criticism, with the coalition providing the support needed for Popi to enforce his will.
The coalition partner, once thought of as a champion of working families, now aligns with policies that strip rights from Canadians, seemingly indifferent to the economic and social toll. His motivations remain murky, but some speculate it’s simply for the guaranteed security and financial rewards that come with supporting Popi’s administration. Many fear that this partnership is an attempt to install a political dynasty that values wealth and control over justice and fairness.
Martial Law and Surveillance: A Leader Obsessed with Power
Rumors swirl that Popi would sooner invoke martial law than hold another election, a move that would officially cement his rule as that of a dictator rather than a leader. Popi’s previous flirtation with martial law left the country uneasy; many are terrified that this time, he’ll use it as a tool to shut down dissent and fortify his hold on power. His government has already introduced sweeping surveillance measures that allow the state to monitor the online activities of Canadians. Ostensibly meant to "combat misinformation," these measures appear more likely to be used to stifle free speech.
To add to the public’s concern, a major newspaper and Popi’s coalition partner have backed the idea of martial law, supporting his stance that such measures might be “necessary” to maintain control. “If he’s done it once, he’ll have no problem doing it again,” commented one of his top supporters. “We believe it’s in Canada’s best interest, especially if the situation calls for it before the next election.” This dark alliance fuels fears that Popi has every intention of using martial law to suppress any opposition, claiming it’s for “public safety” while using it to solidify his control.
Popi has introduced laws that enable the government to control the internet, filtering out content he deems unsuitable and ensuring Canadians see only the information his administration wants them to see. Critics argue that this is just the beginning; that under Popi’s rule, privacy and freedom of expression are eroding faster than ever. The dark undercurrent of these laws lies in their potential to limit any organized opposition, transforming the internet from a forum for free thought into a tool for state surveillance.
The Future of Canada's Economy at Stake
Canada’s economy, once vibrant, now struggles under Popi’s iron-fisted approach. He has hinted at plans to centralize financial systems, bringing in an online currency that would be monitored and controlled by the government. This currency, if implemented, would further allow Popi to oversee all transactions within Canada. It’s a dangerous precedent that could strip Canadians of their financial independence, making them beholden to a state that already seems to care more about control than prosperity.
This proposed currency would mean that all transactions could be tracked and monitored, offering the government unprecedented access to citizens' finances. Experts warn that under this regime, the middle class would bear the heaviest burden, with taxes funneled toward policies that increasingly benefit a small, privileged group close to Popi. There is growing fear that this move will bring Canada into alignment with a handful of other countries where state-controlled currency has led to poverty and economic ruin for the general populace.
Dividing Canadians While Protecting His Inner Circle
Many Canadians, especially those in vulnerable economic positions, feel abandoned. Popi’s policies seem crafted to benefit a select minority, leaving the majority to fend for themselves. His inner circle, which reportedly includes figures with vested interests in foreign powers, remains untouched by the harsh economic realities facing everyday Canadians. They continue to flourish while the rest of the country is burdened by skyrocketing costs and dwindling resources.
Popi has courted a following among a specific subset of Canadians who cling to his promises, seemingly immune to the hardships his policies create. These individuals have been treated with privileges unavailable to the rest, fueling resentment among those who feel overlooked and forgotten. The stark division between the minority he favors and the majority who suffer has only widened, leaving Canada fractured and in turmoil.
A Dangerous Bill Silencing Freedom of Speech
Adding to the mounting concerns, Popi’s administration has introduced the Online Harm Bill, a piece of legislation aimed, supposedly, at combating harmful content. But critics warn that its true purpose is far more sinister. This bill would give Popi’s government sweeping powers to silence dissent, with harsh penalties—including jail time—for those who speak out against his policies. The bill is vague enough to justify the imprisonment of anyone whose opinions challenge the official narrative, effectively gagging freedom of speech in Canada.
This bill stands to transform the country’s landscape of open discussion and healthy debate into one where fear prevails. Under the pretext of ensuring a “safe and respectful” online space, Popi seeks to dismantle the very foundation of democratic discourse. With this law, he can jail dissenters and further tighten his grip, ensuring that any criticism of his rule is snuffed out before it reaches the public.
An Uncertain Future and a Rallying Cry for Freedom
As Canada descends further into recession, Popi’s promises to “save” the nation ring hollow to most. His policies have brought the country to the brink of ruin, and his refusal to relinquish power spells a grim future for Canada. With rumors of further restrictions on freedom and wealth redistribution policies that funnel money to his allies, Canadians find themselves grappling with a question: what will it take to reclaim their nation from this self-declared savior?
In the streets, a quiet resistance grows, a movement of Canadians who have had enough. These citizens remember a Canada of freedom and fairness, and they yearn to see it return. They warn their fellow countrymen to stay vigilant, to resist the creeping influence of Popi’s government over their lives, their incomes, and their freedoms. For them, this is not merely a political battle—it’s a fight to preserve the Canada they love.
As Canadians look to the uncertain horizon, they are reminded of the old adage: power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Popi’s legacy, once one of hope, now casts a long, ominous shadow over the nation. And with each passing day, the call grows louder: Canada must wake up, or risk being lost forever.
Fictional or not you decide.

MUNICIPAL COUNCILS ARE KILLING OUR DEMOCRACTIC RIGHTS?
MUNICIPAL COUNCILS ARE KILLING
OUR DEMOCRACTIC RIGHTS?
Democracy is often said to mean 'rule by the people'. An example of this is any system of government in which people vote their elected representatives into parliament, Federal, Provincial & Municipal.
Today, we the people are being robbed of our democratic rights not by some foreign power but by our very own elected representatives and they’re doing it right in front of us, and we’re letting them, how?
While we are busy in our day to day lives 208 of the 444 Municipal Councils across Ontario were busy writing letters to the AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario), to Premier Doug Ford and to the Hon. Paul Calandra asking that the Municipal Act 2001 be changed to allow Municipal Councils to fire an elected colleague.
In addition these elected municipal councils also want to ban a so called fired elected colleague from running in the next election.
So they want to make sure that we the people can’t vote the colleague back in. What are these municipal councils afraid of?
Municipal Councils, our local elected representatives have been creating and passing by-laws against the people, that they are supposed to be working for. These By-laws have been taking away the rights of we the people to have a say in what’s happening in our communities. Some examples
- lowering the amount of time a citizen can speak to 5 minutes from 10 minutes
- not allowing resident, a visitor, to show their feelings by clapping, cheering, booing, or having a sign while in council chambers.
In Durham, Pickering Municipal Council these past two years have passed numerous by-laws to quiet, to suppress you the residents and neighbours, to voice any concerns about your city. Some are;
1 - ban the media from attending and filming unless they get voted permission from 2/3 ‘s
of council
2 - ban private citizens from recording or filming meetings
3 - removed the open question opportunity
4 - only Pickering residents can speak to a topic on the agenda if they register by noon
on meeting day
5 - ban members of the public from speaking who are not Pickering residents or Pickering
tax payers
6 - no longer allow Pickering residents to speak to a topic of concern when submitted 10 days prior to a meeting. Pickering Residents must now have their request (topic) approved, seconded and then have 2/3 ‘s vote to allow the resident to speak about their concern..
NOTE - This it’s just in Pickering where this is happening, it’s quietly happening in many of the Ontario municipalities. It has been more widely publicized about Pickering’s Municipal Council’s indifference and attack removing the democratic rights of citizens, the people who elected them.
The Federal Government is taking away our rights to freedom of speech with Bill C-63 The Online
Harms Act. - It’s not just about internet child pornography, it also goes onto penalizing your free speech. Check it out. All Bills can be found online at the appropriate government web site.
So the Question is ………….. Do You Still Want Democracy ?
“Do we want our democratic rights stripped away and silenced by a dictatorship as Pickering Council is doing or, are we finally going to wake up, stand up and speak up, to protect our democratic rights and the democratic rights of our children and our future generations, as our ancestors stood for us?”
Please, if you want to keep your democratic rights alive the take an interest in what’s been happening in your community. If you don’t have the time to attend council meetings, you can go online and find the agendas, the minutes and view the meetings live or at your convenience anytime.
Enter to, ….... Pickering.ca/en/cityhall.aspx ….... once there select council meetings, then select
calendar. Here you can select any date and category, all meetings go back for years.
Have your voice heard, get the, City Clerk’s email, then let the clerk know your opinion about anything you agree or disagree with what the council does. Make sure to include that you want your email given to every member of council and the clerk by law has to distribute as you requested.
Remember Silence Solves Nothing, Stand Up & Speak Up For Your Democratic Rights.
Before Municipal Councils continue voting by-laws to remove them. GET INVOLVED.
We The People’s Voice in Danger – Pickering Council’s Attempt to Override Democracy
We The People’s Voice
in Danger – Pickering Council’s
Attempt to Override Democracy
By Lisa Robinson
As an elected representative, I am profoundly, no I am disgustingly disturbed by the recent push by all of my fellow council members, including the Mayor, to secure the power to remove an elected official based solely on a City-Paid Integrity Commissioner’s recommendation - one they can request themselves and then vote on internally. This draconian maneuver represents a fundamental attack on democracy, granting council members unprecedented authority to silence dissenting voices under the pretense of enforcing “accountability.”
One of the biggest concerns here is that these changes would give unelected officials, such as the City-Paid Integrity Commissioners, the power to remove elected officials from office.
Right now, it’s the voters who hold elected officials accountable, as mandated by Section 224 of the Municipal Act, which ensures that council members represent the public. Handing over the power to remove elected officials to unelected officials undermines the core democratic principle that it’s the voters who should decide if their representatives stay in office.
This doesn’t just affect Pickering; it sets a dangerous precedent for the entire province. If these measures pass, elected officials could be removed in any Ontario municipality without the public’s say. Integrity Commissioners, originally intended to investigate and recommend penalties like fines or temporary suspensions under Section 223.3 of the Municipal Act, would instead wield the authority to expel officials from office entirely, a power that could easily be abused. The democratic process could then be easily sidestepped based on subjective decisions rather than the will of the voters. If you’ve been following my updates on YouTube (Lisa Robinson) or reading my weekly column here in The Central, you’ll have seen how the Act is already being used as a tool to repeatedly suspend a member’s pay for up to 90 days at a time. With no cap on how often these penalties can be imposed, the threat of financial punishment is wielded continuously against those who dare to challenge the prevailing narrative.
Adding to this, council’s proposal includes provisions to bar any council member removed from office from running in the next election. This is a clear act of political suppression and election tampering, preventing officials from re-seeking office without giving the public any voice in that decision. According to Section 3 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, every citizen has the right to run for office and choose their representatives. Blocking someone from running again without allowing the voters to weigh in is an affront to basic democratic rights and an attempt to manipulate election outcomes.
This push comes amid existing council-imposed restrictions that already limit what Pickering residents can address in public meetings. We’re witnessing an alarming attempt to stifle public voices, dictating what residents can and cannot speak about, effectively filtering out any opposition. As if vetoing the community’s agenda wasn’t enough, now these members are trying to dictate who can even sit in office, directly undermining the democratic process.
And let’s be clear: if council members were genuinely concerned about “safety,” they would address misconduct evenly, regardless of political alignment. When Councillor Brenner publicly threatened to “sharpen his sword” to “decapitate the Mayor” or made a disturbing comment about “sticking a knife in my back, slowly twisting it, and I’d never know until he was pulling it out,” council took no action.
These comments would have raised alarm if safety were truly the priority. But since these remarks came from within council’s circle of influence, no repercussions followed. Meanwhile, I, the only council member to raise concerns about corruption, collusion, perceived blackmail, and manipulation of city records, am singled out. Council’s message is loud and clear: they will protect their own at all costs, wielding Integrity Commissioner reports as tools to silence those who challenge their actions.
Their proposed changes, masquerading under Bill 207, the Municipal Accountability and Integrity Act, 2024, disguise authoritarian controls as “measures for inclusion and safety.” This legislation would allow council members to engineer Integrity Commissioner reviews and remove dissenting officials, fostering an environment in which public servants can be ousted for standing up against the status quo. This isn’t about democracy - it’s about suppression.
The hypocrisy is undeniable. The same council members who claim these measures promote “diversity, equity, and inclusion” are pushing changes that would strip away democratic protections for minority voices. True diversity should allow for a range of ideas, especially those that challenge the status quo. By imposing authoritarian controls, council is advancing only its own narrow narrative and silencing any countering perspectives.
It’s also alarming how they manipulate communication with the public to advance their agenda. Council meetings are increasingly shrouded in secrecy: restrictions prevent residents from recording meetings, and public press media, are censored or
quietly buried, ensuring critical statements and events never reach the community. This stranglehold on information allows council to present only its version of events, shielding themselves from accountability.
Pickering Council’s actions reveal a government more focused on consolidating power than on serving the people. These council members have abandoned their duty to represent, choosing instead to suppress, control, and tamper with the very democratic process they were elected to uphold.
They show little respect for the voices of the people who entrusted them with power, and if they cannot honor that responsibility, they should step down. Elected officials should represent, not purge, silence, or manipulate those they disagree with.
Haunted Houses Theresa Grant
Real Estate Columnist
It’s one thing to settle into a new space knowing it will take some time to get used to all the little quirks and sounds that come along with every individual place. It’s quite another thing to try to get used to things that go bump in the night – every night.
When it comes to haunted houses, we’ve all heard stories of strange sounds like children crying, someone calling your name, apparitions that seem to walk the hallways and so on.
Some people love ghost stories and actively seek out haunted places. Some will spend big money to stay in hotel rooms that are known to be haunted, hoping to have an experience with a ghost.
Others, however, are not as enthusiastic about the paranormal, especially when it comes to purchasing a home. One might think that if something horrific took place in a house that you are considering purchasing, that that fact might be disclosed to you. You would be sadly mistaken. In Ontario anyway. In Canada, the Province of Quebec is the only Province that requires the seller or the seller’s representative to disclose any paranormal activity in or on the property, or any stigma associated with the property such as a murder, suicide or major crime.
The Canadian Real Estate Association deems a stigmatized property to be one with an intangible, non- physical attribute that could elicit and emotional or psychological response from a potential buyer.
In Ontario it is buyer beware. That being said, The Ontario Real Estate Association does require all Registrants to operate with fairness, honesty, and integrity. This is part of the code of ethics. So, to break it down, the seller or seller’s representative do not have to disclose by law, but ethically, if they are aware they should. On the buyer’s side however, it’s a bit of a different story. If a buyer’s agent is aware of stigma associated with a property their purchaser is thinking about, they are obligated to share that with their client.
Just another reason to work with an agent that knows the area you are looking to purchase in, and whom you trust completely.
I myself purchased an old semi in downtown Oshawa years ago. It was over 100 years old when I purchased it and in need of real help. I moved in and got to work painting and updating it. I took great pleasure in watching the old house take on a whole new look and feel over the next couple of years. It was during a conversation that I had with my neighbour who owned the other side of the semi, that I was made aware of a horrific incident that had taken place there thirty years earlier. There had been a large and devastating fire at the house and the little boy who lived there did not survive. The family remained in the house and the back of the house was rebuilt. After several years the family moved away.
Given that there is no obligation on the part of the seller to disclose stigma, it is definitely in the best interest of the potential purchaser to ask questions regarding this type of thing if it would affect your decision.

SNIP DURHAM
By Maurice Brenner
Regional Councillor Ward 1 Pickering
At a recent Pickering Council Meeting, we learnt about a new organization in Durham Region that provides subsidized services for neutering/spaying which is an essential component of being a responsible pet owner. But for some, the financial cost of this service is beyond their means. When not neutered or not spayed it not only contributes to pet overpopulation but can also compromise the health of our furry friends contributing to diseases such as cancers and prostatic disease. SNIP will be visiting lower tier Municipalities across Durham promoting their service as well as looking for financial support.
Spray Neuter Initiatives Association (SNIP) is a non-profit organization that is committed to addressing the issue of over population of cats and dogs across Durham Region by offering a subsidy to those who can not afford the high cost of these procedures. Thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers and veterinarians SNIP is making a positive impact.
While working together with Animal Services, SNIP’s goal is to keep animals from having to be surrendered while Animal Services provides a similar service but only after being surrendered.
The SNIP Spay / Neuter Program is available to residents of Durham Region based on the current living wage in Durham Region.
– Total income of one household member not to exceed $37,492.
– Total income of two household members not to exceed $48,204.
To learn more about SNIP or how to be a sponsor donor, they can be reached at 905-244-3484 or email to lindapower@bell.net or visit their website at www.snipanimalclinic.ca
Before Spending Money on a ‘Career Coach,’ Do Yourself a Favour, First Try These Job Search Strategies
Before Spending Money on a ‘Career Coach,’ Do Yourself a Favour, First Try These Job Search Strategies
By Nick Kossovan
I'm sure you're aware of the "career coaching" industry—Internet talking heads promising job search and career success—that's sprung up in recent years. Worth noting: The industry is unregulated. All career coaches are self-proclaimed; no certification or licensing is required.
Career coaches have one ultimate goal: To make money off you. Today's tight job market is making job seekers frustrated and desperate, which career coaches are taking advantage of with their promise of insider knowledge, personalized guidance, and a direct line to the hidden job market. Career coaches market themselves as a shortcut to finding a job, which is appealing when you've been unemployed for a while.
I'm not averse to hiring a career coach to assist you with your job search; it's your money. However, keep in mind a career coach... · is a significant expense, especially if you're unemployed · will only offer common sense advice, nothing that you probably already don't know or haven't read or heard before, and · doesn't have insider knowledge ...and you'll still need to do the activities related to job searching.
When asked, "Nick, should I hire a career coach?" my answer is an unequivocal "No!" Conducting your job search solo will not only save you money, you'll also be developing job search skills you'll need for the next time—chances are there'll be a next time—you're job hunting. Before spending thousands of dollars on a career coach, I suggest first trying the following job search strategies.
Optimize your online presence.
In today's digital-first job market, employers will check your online digital footprint to evaluate your candidacy; are your interview-worthy? Start with the obvious: Ensure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and showcases your quantified accomplishments (a non-quantified statement is an opinion) so employers can see the value you can add. Do yourself a favour, read LinkedIn Mastery: A Comprehensive Guide to Navigating Digital Landscapes Effectively, by Benjamin Stone.
Necessary: Stay active on LinkedIn!
Your LinkedIn profile can't be non-active. Maximizing LinkedIn's potential requires regularly engaging with content, commenting on posts, and contributing original content. Engaging actively and visibly on LinkedIn will lead to opportunities.
Next: · List your social media accounts. · Deactivate accounts you are no longer using.
· Set any accounts you don't want prospective employers or recruiters to see to private.
· Ensure your social media profiles (e.g., display name, handle, headshot, bio) convey the same message about your professional background.
Leverage your existing network (a low-hanging fruit few job seekers take advantage of).
Everyone has a network of some sort. This means since all job opportunities are attached to people—good news—there are job opportunities all around you. Often, your barista, dentist, hairstylist, neighbours, fellow members of whatever club or association you're a part of, and, of course, family and friends can help open doors for you. Tell everyone you know that you're looking for a new job. Always carry extra copies of your resume and hand them out when appropriate. You'll be surprised at the number of people willing to help you when they understand your situation.
Read these two books:
· Never Eat Alone, by Keith Ferrazzi - Ferrazzi outlines practical strategies for building relationships, networking, and leveraging connections. · Finish What You Start, by Peter Hollins
Hollins provides actionable strategies for achieving your job search and career goals, such as overcoming procrastination and boosting productivity with focus and discipline.
Apply less, connect more.
Applying online is a waste of time. In previous columns, I've noted that applying online is comparable to playing the lottery; you're hoping a stranger hires you. Numerous studies have shown that most jobs aren't advertised; they're filled through connections and referrals.
Job searching today is a long game; you need to be patient. Today, you need to network your way into a company and identify opportunities, which no career coach can do for you. It's unlikely the resume you submit online will be reviewed. Paying to have your resume redesigned won't get it more views; getting it in front of people who can hire you will.
Take what you will from the following.
A few months back, a job seeker asked me, "I've been working as a help desk agent at a healthcare software company for five years. I want to become a Director of IT at a large multinational company. What should I do?" How should I know? I'm not a Director of IT. Why not ask the Director of IT at a large multinational company?
Take advantage of the fact that people love talking about themselves. Dinner with someone who holds the position you aspire to is a better investment than hiring a career coach who lacks your dinner partner's real-world experience. I charted my career path by observing those ahead of me and seeking their advice. Talking to people who are where you want to be will benefit your job search and help you achieve your career aspirations.
By shifting your mindset, optimizing your online presence, leveraging your existing network, staying engaged on LinkedIn, and connecting with the right people, you won't need to hire a costly career coach, and you'll develop skills you can use throughout your career.

Unlocking Our Northern Resources is Canada’s Future
Unlocking Our Northern Resources is Canada’s Future
by Maj (ret'd) CORNELIU. CHISU, CD, PMSC,
FEC, CET, P. Eng.
Former Member of Parliament
Pickering-Scarborough East
Our country has the second largest land mass in the world, and it has a treasure trove of Natural Resources that we are not using. The Northern stretches of our country are particularly well endowed, but sadly, they are also particularly ignored. During my tenure in the House of Commons, I always looked for ways to develop the Canadian Arctic both economically and as an essential part of the defence of Canada.
Canada's three territories, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Yukon - account for nearly 40 percent of the country's land mass and have a coastline that is twice as long as the Atlantic and Pacific coasts combined.
However, Northerners number only about 114,000, with many living in the territorial capitals of Iqaluit, Yellowknife and Whitehorse.
Indigenous peoples make up 86 percent of the population of Nunavut, 51 percent in the Northwest Territories and 23 percent in Yukon. The North is a place with many settled land claims and boasts a world-class geology.
There are many different natural resources in the Arctic region of Canada. The land has gold and other minerals like zinc and copper, as well as diamonds. There are many mines in the Arctic for extracting these minerals and diamonds that provide jobs. Canada is the third largest producer of diamonds in the world.
These diamond mines, strategic minerals and large oil and gas reserves could form the basis of a lucrative materials industry. In addition, the rich and unique cultures of our Northern territories could attract visitors from around the world, contributing to a thriving tourism industry. Thus, the North has the potential to become an engine for economic growth for the entire country and a destination for investment.
The potential for wealth and job creation through resource development in the North is tremendous. Managed in a sustainable manner, Canada's incredible natural resources, including living marine resources such as fisheries, could contribute to the prosperity of Northerners and all Canadians for generations.
These resources have the potential to be a cornerstone for sustained economic activity in the North and throughout Canada. The only problem is that Canadian governments since WW2 have had little interest in developing the country as a whole. They have remained focused on the old established settlements around the three big cities, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, and a narrow strip of land North of the US border.
There have not been any new ideas, let alone revolutionary ones, for developing the country, cluttering the minds or desks of any politicians in the recent past. They limit themselves in the House of Commons to producing and pursuing imaginary political fights without any substance. Unfortunately, this trend continues in our current times, and shows no signs of abating.
It is time to ask our politicians outright, what they are prepared to do today, for developing Canada; to establish new settlements and develop northern resources. Here is where the real future of Canada lies, not in fruitless and imaginary financial manipulations and corporate welfare.
The federal government has the opportunity to unlock the North’s enormous potential for the benefit of all Canadians. Let us hope that one day soon they will do just that.
The North is often viewed through the lens of its challenges — vast distances, harsh climates, and small populations — but these very factors make the North an exciting opportunity for Canada. As global attention focuses on critical minerals, climate resilience, and the Arctic’s geopolitical significance, the strategic potential of the North has never been clearer.
The vastness of the North, while an asset, also poses real challenges. Nearly half of the communities lack year-round road access, leaving them isolated from essential goods and services. As climate change accelerates, northern supply chains are increasingly threatened by shorter winter-road seasons and lower water levels for barging. The impact of these changes has already been felt, with the rising cost of living and lost economic opportunities.
Here, then, is the importance of federal investments in the North, rather than in futile and very costly international projects and subsidies.
The importance of investing in Canada’s North cannot be overstressed.
We need to invest in climate-resilient infrastructure including all-season roads and energy and communications corridors to strengthen the North’s connection to the rest of Canada. We must ensure that Canada’s link to the Arctic remains secure, and we must unlock its economic potential. The North is warming at four times the global average, and the consequences of climate change are already reshaping life there.
The North is Canada’s next horizon. Through strategic investments in housing, infrastructure, climate resilience, and critical minerals, the federal government has the opportunity to unlock the North’s enormous potential for the benefit of all Canadians.
So how can we alert the Canadian political world to making the development of the North a first priority?
What do you think?
